Mavrick
2 Review
( July 10,
2005 )
I originally purchased the Maverick
2 as an inexpensive way to
learn 3d flying prior to building and flying the
balsa/monologue 3d
plane my wife got me for Christmas. I thought, hmmm,
what a simple,
light weight and minimal tears when I crash,
airplane. Much to my
surprise, I love flying the Maverick much more than I
anticipated,
which is why my balsa plane is only half finished.
(Too much time
flying and not building.)
The Maverick
2 went together very easily, but it helps to have some
basic
understanding of how R/C planes and their components work. I
assembled
it rather quickly, several evenings during the week, and
put a
quick paint job on it during the process. The intent of the
paint
scheme was to be somewhat creative, but really just to be
able to
distinguish the attitude of flight. (Inverted or not.) I
used the
Hi-tec HS-55 servos (x4) which are a perfect fit, AXI
2212/34
brushless external rotors, E-flite 20 amp Brushless speed
control,
Thunder Power Li-Po 1320 mAh 3-cell, GWS 4ch Pico receiver
And my JR
8103 transmitter. I have been experimenting with several
different
props, but have found the APC 10 x 7 to work the best so
far for my
flying style and conditions.
I have not
felt like I needed to experiment with any other part of
the plane.
The control throws and equipment positioning suggested
in the manual are right on.
All in all, this plane has far
exceeded my expectations. Since it
was my first attempt at 3D, it took a little getting
use to; flying
something that has no lift created by its' wings
and/or fusalage. I
have had a couple of mishaps, but none because of the
quality of
the plane. The worst was a low level pass that went a
little wrong
when a sudden cross wind gust forced the plane to
land sooner than
I planned. A little hot glue in a few spots and I was
back flying
within an hour. Because of the tremendous power to
weight ratio,
you can just "throttle out" of most awkward
situations. I know I
will be a lot more comfortable and confident once I
am ready to try
3D with my balsa/monologue plane thanks to the
Maverick 2.
Thanks for offering a great and very affordable kit!
